State Tretyakov Gallery

The State Tretyakov Gallery is the number-one destination for Russian fine art in the world. The gallery's history began with Russian merchant and collector Pavel Tretyakov's first art purchase in 1856. On the opening day in August 1893, the Pavel and Sergei Tretyakov Moscow City Gallery was visited by almost 700 people. 

Now the gallery has two buildings: the second one plays host to the greatest collection of Russian avant-garde and modern art in the world, also holding temporary thematic and retrospective exhibitions on various aspects in Russian and world art history.
